Horror flick Sea Fever worth catching: Quick Bite Review

Sommerleigh Pollonais – Horror Head Writer

I’ve made it a habit to stay away from movie trailers of late. Most of them give away so much, you feel like you’ve just watched the damn movie. And then of course, there are those that deliberately mislead you. So I went into Sea Fever with no idea what to expect and I happy to say, it’s a gamble that paid off.

Now before you rush off to watch this movie, lemme say, it’s not THAT kind of horror movie. The title, Sea Fever, does make it sound like it’s gonna be full of gore, action and jump scares. Probably some kinda sea monster (Cthulhu!) eating the ever-lovin’ crap out of a crew of misfits. While there is a bit of blood here and there, it isn’t that kind of movie.

But what Sea Fever lacks in general horror, it more than makes up for with a great sense of atmosphere and a story that would make H.P. Lovecraft smile.

A marine biologist student joins a group of fishermen on their trawler to study anomalies in sea life. When they enter uncharted waters, something snares their boat and infects the crew.

In another time and place, I would’ve watched this and probably not given it a second thought. But the themes of self-quarantining, thinking of the whole and not just the one, and the fear and paranoia that goes with facing an infection with no cure in sight, well to say it resonated with me is an understatement.

It’s a slow grind of a movie that I would never recommend to those who just enjoy “dipping a toe” into the horror pool every now and again. But if you’re up for something a bit deeper, then maybe you won’t mind catching a bit of Sea Fever.

Rating: 6 out of 10
