Deep Blue Sea 3 (yes, there is a part 3): Quick Bite Review

Sommerleigh Pollonais – Horror Head Writer

I don’t think anyone watching Deep Blue Sea 3 is going in expecting, well, Deep Blue Sea 1. Hell, most of you probably didn’t know there was a Part 2. But surprisingly, DPS3 turned out to be a lot better than I expected. It’s no Meg, but it’s definitely not as bad as Sharknado. So that’s something.

Keeping the story beats of the past two movies, DPS3 follows a group of marine biologists who are studying the effects of climate change off the coast of Mozambique, when three bull sharks come a-swimming into their waters, closely chased by hunters hired by the company that created them.

Good stuff first: A decent group of unknowns who can act, is a rare thing, but that’s what we get here. Most of the cast manage to take the bare bones character beats given to them by the writers and turn them into people you don’t mind spending time with. The special effects weren’t bad for the budget (if you’ve seen Sharknado, you’ve seen worse) and the small but beautiful location was well shot and utilised to the fullest, with nice underwater scenes, decent action sequences, and some groovy shark kills.

Little did Jonny know at that very moment Sharky’s twin brother, Sharko, was plotting his revenge…

The bad is basically exactly what you would expect from a VOD movie based on a schlocky shark movie. Cliched bad guys (I don’t even remember their names), plots you’ll see coming from a mile away (the ex-boyfriend has ulterior motives?!! who knew??!!!) and the people who you think will die, are gonna die.

But I’ll give them this – Deep Blue Sea Pt. 3, is leaps and bounds better than the second movie and actually managed to entertain me all the way through. And as shark movies go, I would easily put it smack dab in the middle of the scoreboard.

Rating: 5 out of 10
