The Kissing Booth 2 Quick Bite

Sommerleigh Pollonais – Senior Writer

While I might not be the target demographic, I’ll readily admit, I enjoyed The Kissing Booth. So watching the sequel was an easy choice. But while the first movie was corny, sweet and fun, making it easy to forgive the cringey stuff, (like the somewhat toxic masculinity) The Kissing Booth 2 is a bit of a bloated mess.

Ninety percent of the cast has returned and you can tell they’re in their comfort zones, playing characters they enjoy being and who we the viewing audience have come to love. Joey King as Elle is still a cutesy goofball, but it works for her and she does another great job of making us root for her. But while the cast are handling their respective parts admirably, the story, or should I say stories, at play here are a bit of a bloated mess.

There are just too many subplots people. We have Elle’s bestie Lee struggling to find balance between his best friend and boyfriend duties, Elle and Lee training for a Dance Dance competition, Elle and her possible budding romance with new hottie Marco, and somewhere in between all of this is the Kissing Booth, which plays a much lesser part this time around.

On the positive side, when its narrowing things down to the main storyline of Elle and Noah navigating the difficulties of a long distance relationship, it feels like the story fans of the first movie fell for. But it’s hard to look past the forced sweetness, the one-montage-too-many and the DAMN MUSIC that keeps invading every scene to find a reason to revisit this Kissing Booth.
