The Lovebirds Quick Bite

Sommerleigh Pollonais – Senior Writer

Most times, great chemistry and solid acting can get the job done, but in the case of The Lovebirds, it just wasn’t enough.

The film stars Kumail Nanjiani (The Big Sick, Stuber) and Issa Rae (Insecure, Little), who are both very funny people and their chemistry as a couple is very believable. They also both have a gift for ad-lib that make for some genuinely funny moments in this movie. The story itself is extremely reminiscent of Date Night (starring Steve Carrell and Tina Fey) and while that movie wasn’t the greatest comedy ever, it has a lot of energy to it, that this movie gravely lacks. Director Michael Showalter knows his stuff, with movies under his belt like Wet Hot American Summer and The Big Sick, which were both really good. So in this humble movie lover’s opinion, the screenplay holds most of the blame.

Well that’s weird – that guy in the back with the hat isn’t looking at his phone

The movie has a by-the-numbers story that, like I said before, is basically a dumbed down version of Date Night. The Lovebirds has no interesting characters besides the main leads. No surprises and no memorable stand-out moments. Our lead characters, Leliani and Jibran, are lovable enough to keep you watching, but they just aren’t enough to make this generic movie worth watching a second or third time.

Sorry, but in my opinion, these lovebirds just don’t fly.
