Tense flight drama 7500 Quick Bite

Sommerleigh Pollonais – Senior Writer

7500 doesn’t feel like a movie, and that’s the greatest compliment I can pay this hyper realistic portrayal of a plane hijacking and the pilots and crew that have to deal with such a terrifying situation.

The film stars Joseph Gordon-Levitt (Inception, The Dark Knight Rises) as a young American co-pilot who struggles to save the lives of his passengers and crew during a hijacking. Gordon-Levitt, once again proving his capabilities as a talented actor, carries most of the movie on his shoulders and does a stellar job in the process.

Director Patrick Vollrath wanted the movie to have a true sense of reality and decided to let the actors react naturally in the moment (sit/stand/move), whether is suited the lighting or not. While difficult to do at first, JGL said it let him truly immerse himself in his character, and for us the viewers it adds a layer of unpredictability to the scenes, especially when it involves interactions between the terrorist and the crew.

My mom wanted me to be a pilot. I wanted to be a saxophonist

Truth be told everyone does a great job here, and this story is told in such a grounded and straightforward manner you feel like you’re looking at real life footage and not just another action/drama movie. This makes it difficult to watch at times, as the terrorists here aren’t playing for laughs and the moments when lives are lost will gut punch you harder than you’ll probably expect.

Also because the location is mostly the cockpit of a plane, there’s this sense of claustrophobia added to the tension that builds and builds and builds, right up to the riveting conclusion.

So if you’re going into 7500 (the actual code for a plane hijacking) expecting something along the lines of Passenger 57, you’re gonna be dissapointed. But if you’re willing to give it a go, I think you’ll find a lot to appreciate in this drama.
