Thank you San Diego Comic Con!
Among the many things released during the annual convention was a trailer for upcoming Netflix TV series “Luke Cage” as well as teasers for next year’s “Iron Fist” and “Defenders”. The latter show is a team up of Daredevil (who has had two Netflix seasons so far), Jessica Jones (one season), Cage and Iron Fist. The Netflix shows, like “Marvel: Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.”, also form part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
So, as superheroes do with random henchmen, we will take the new videos one by one:
Power to the Man!
We last saw Luke Cage (superhero name Power Man and played by Mike Colter) showing off his unbreakable skin and superhuman strength while romancing Jessica Jones in her series last year. He did the character justice and really got me excited for his solo series.
The new trailer opens with an old man telling Cage that he should be helping people “like them other fellars downtown”, presumably a reference to the Avengers. Cage then remarks that his late wife used to tell him the same thing.

The late Wu Tang Clan rapper Ol Dirty Bastard’s “Baby I like it raw” come on, Cage pulls up his hoodie and stuff starts to go down. He knocks down a door with a car door and then beats the ever living crap out of some thug,s with bullets bouncing off of him like it’s nobody’s business. We then see him chatting with crime boss and comic book Cage villain Cornell “Cottonmouth” Stokes.
Each of the Netflix shows have their own feel and I am liking the gritty urban world presented in the trailer. I am interested to see, however, how they add some vulnerability to the unbreakable character.
Iron Fist of Fury
Next up we have Cage’s comic book best bud and partner Danny Rand aka Iron Fist, a mystical martial arts master, played by Finn Jones (Loras Tyrell from “Game of Thrones”). Now the teaser is quite the tease as we do not see his costume, which is not the easiest to adapt for television, or his super cool glowing Iron Fist.

We do get some images of him as a child and presumably with his mother. Then we see him in the snow after what appears to be a plane crash. Then a couple of Buddhist monks looking down at him. We then see some city views and Rand with crazy guy beard struggling while tied to a bed.
The little action we get is him punching through a wall though again no glimpse of the glowing hand. Then some mysterious character saying “hello Danny”.
Iron Fist is a quite a cool character and his series, which will be released next year, will likely deepen the mysticism which was introduced in Daredevil Season Two. And I really want to see him kung fu a bunch of guys and hit a guy the Iron Fist to the face. Like really, really, badly.
The Best Defense
Finally we have the “Defenders” teaser which does not show any footage but goes for a visual artsy approach. We see a newspaper collage-like thing and references to Daredevil, Alias Investigations (Jessica Jones), Seagate Prison (where Cage was imprisoned) and a note with “who is Danny Rand” with the Iron Fist symbol (Iron Fist).
Then we see a hand with the word “Defend” and the voice of Scott Glenn as “Stick”, the blind martial arts master from Daredevil, speaking the dialogue “you think the four of you can save New York? You can’t even save yourselves.”

We don’t know who will be the big bad or organisation that will require all these four heroes to take down or who or what will bring them together a la Nick Fury, but I am most excited to see “Defenders” when it drops next year. And with the caliber and quality shown in “Daredevil” and “Jessica Jones” I believe Netflix will continue to blow us away with these new series.
So what did you think of the trailer and teasers? What are you most excited to see? Feel free to comment below.
