Not so Dark Knight: LEGO Batman Trailer is fun in 4 slices

There was quite the cornucopia of film trailers at this year’s San Diego Comic Con including our first look at next year’s Justice League featuring everyone’s favorite caped crusader Batman.

Well there was also a second trailer featuring Batman but in a much more humorous setting – The Lego Batman Movie. The trailer (linked below) packs in a lot of laughs and meta humor in a bright and colorful package. So let’s bite into it in four easy to chew slices:

Want to know my secret identity?

#1 He’s Batman

The movie, a spin off of 2014 hit The LEGO Movie, sees Will Arnett return as the voice of Batman as the Dark Knight tries to save Gotham from the Joker voiced by Zach Galifianakis (Hangover trilogy). Arnett was one of the funniest parts of the movie and put his own silly spin on the iconic character which deserved a spin off.

The movie is directed by Chris McKay who codirected the first film. The vivid colours and bright world from The LEGO Movie do return and from the trailer it looks like audiences, young and old, will be in for a fun time. I am looking forward to a blend of action, adventure and humour from this flick.

#2 Rearrested Development

Arnett is joined by fellow “Arrested Development” alum Michael Cera as an extremely perky fan boy version of Dick Grayson/Robin. The two play off each other well and their relationship will likely be the core of the humor (more on that later). We also meet Alfred Pennyworth, played by Ralph Fiennes, but no shots of Batgirl who is being voiced by Rosario Dawson.

What to wear, what to wear?

#3 So you got jokes

One thing that stands out most in the trailer is the comedy, and the jokes hit their mark like a well aimed batarang. Arnett’s over serious Batman still wearing his mask while in a robe, Alfred admonishing him and Robin choosing his costume are all rib ticklers. There are also a couple jokes aiming fun at the Batman mythos and previous incarnations of the characters, and this meta humour is splendid. If the jokes in the rest of the movie are on par with these we are in for a riot.

#4 Lego Cinematic Universe

I am very excited by what this movie represents. LEGO has quite a few franchises under its belt, including the likes of Lord of the Rings, Star Wars, Harry Potter and Indiana Jones, and many of these have been turned into LEGO-themed video games. Imagine all of these and more as LEGO movies in a shared cinematic universe. Mind blowing right? Like playing with those little blocks the possibilities are massive.

So what LEGO theme would you most like to see given the movie treatment? Feel free to comment below.
