Some Assembly Required: Justice League trailer is intriguing in 5 slices

One of the biggest trailers to come out of San Diego Comic Con was next year’s Justice League (posted below), which continues the story from this year’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.

In the trailer we see Batman/Bruce Wayne (Ben Affleck) recruiting heroes Aquaman/Arthur Curry (Jason Momoa), The Flash/Barry Allen (Ezra Miller) and Victor Stone/Cyborg (Ray Fisher) to stop a coming evil, which we have found out to be the New God and Darkseid warrior Steppenwolf and his army of Parademons. Wayne is aided in his quest by Wonder Woman/Diana Prince (Gal Gadot).

But enough with the context. Here’s the trailer in five easy to chew slices:

Justice League Aquaman
I don’t want, yer life

#1 Talks with fishes

The trailer opens with Wayne in a fishing village listening to fisher folk speak about the stranger who comes from the sea and brings them fishes during the winter. Kind of like a salty Santa Claus who gives out trout instead of teddy bears.

Enter Aquaman with his weird eyes, gruff demeanour and apparent fondness for liquor. He appears to be the most reluctant to join the new league and even gets all rough house with Wayne. I am really liking the look of Momoa as Aquaman and the scene where he is submerged by crashing waves is sublime. It will be interesting to see how they interpret his powers as “the guy who talks to fishes”, as Wayne jokes, can get real cheesy real easy.

Justice League Mother Box
What’s in the box?!

#2 My mother what?

In the trailer there is a brief clip of some medieval looking people burying a Mother Box. What’s a Mother Box you say? It’s a device with a multitude of uses (which you can read about here) but one of its main functions is the ability to open and close “boom tubes” which are extra-dimensional point-to-point travel portals.

Steppenwolf is supposed to be searching for three Mother Boxes on Earth, and he likely plans to use them to bring his lord Darkseid and his army to conquer the world. That old chestnut.

Justice League Cyborg
Our enemies will be terminated!

#3 The ‘Borg

The trailer also gives us a good look at pre-cyborg Cyborg as football player Vic Stone and post-transformation full suit Cyborg. The costume is pretty comic accurate and I like the inhuman aesthetic. I look forward to seeing all his fancy gadgets and weapons.

Justice League Flash
Do you know what I feel a need for?

#4 Snap Crackle Whiz

From the trailer it seems that DC is trying to lighten the ultra-serious tone of Man of Steel and Batman v Superman just a tad. And nowhere is that more apparent than in the character of Flash. He is a bit awkward and weird with lines like “I need friends”.

Miller’s Barry Allen seems set up as the main comic relief. With Batman and Flash I did get a bit of a Spider-Man and Iron Man in Captain America: Civil War vibe though that was not necessarily a bad thing.

I will say that his speed effects with the blue lightning did seem a bit off though and did not really convey super speed as well as The Flash in the CW TV series or Quicksilver in the last two X-Men films. Will have to see the movie to make a final judgment.

Don’t you, forget about me, don’t don’t don’t don’t…

#5 Where’s the Supes?

One glaring omission from the trailer is Superman. Now (SPOILER ALERT for Batman v Superman) while he did die in the previous film he is set to appear in the Justice League. I believe that he will resurrect about halfway through the movie or at the very least in the third act. Because you really cannot have Justice League without Superman. That’s like a peanut butter and jelly sandwich without the bread.

And I also think that we will get a glimpse of him in the later trailers though hopefully they don’t go overboard and show too much like they did with Batman v Superman. The trailer is quite action lite as well so expect some sweet superhero team action in subsequent trailers.
