Backstory: Eight months pregnant Laci Peterson went missing on Christmas Eve 2002 in Modest, California. Her disappearance attracted nationwide media attention and as Laci’s family, friends and the authorities searched frantically for her while her husband Scott’s apathy towards her disappearance caused suspicion. On December 30th, a woman named Amber Frey, who identified herself as Scott’s girlfriend, informed the investigating detectives that Scott had presented himself as single and a widower to her when they first met in November. He confessed to Amber that this Christmas would be the first without his wife, at least two weeks before Laci’s disappearance.

Afterward, Laci’s family held a press conference stating vehemently that they no longer supported Scott and were convinced that he had something to do with her disappearance and urged him to cooperate with the authorities so that they could find her. However, in April 2003, Laci and her unborn son’s remains were discovered when they washed up onshore. DNA testing confirmed their identities, and Scott Peterson was arrested and convicted of his crimes. He is currently serving a life sentence without parole in Mule Creek State Prison, California.
The murder of Laci Peterson and her unborn son Conner is considered to be one of the most publicized true crime cases in American history. In August 2024, Netflix released a three-episode docuseries, American Murder: Laci Peterson, that is based on this shocking and tragic true crime case. The series is directed by American cinematographer Skye Borgman (Abducted in Plain Sight, Girl in the Picture).

One of the strongest elements of the series that builds up the emotional tones are the header interviews with Laci’s mother, Sharon Rocha, speaking for the first time since her daughter’s death; Laci’s three best friends; and Amber Frey. Through home videos, the audience gets a chance to experience Laci’s bubbly, energetic personality as it simply radiates off the screen. The series is extremely well-supported by tons of archival news footage, additional interviews with a few of Laci’s family and a couple members of Scott’s family, as well as the investigating detectives and reporters who covered the developing story during that time period. Each episode is very well organised and chronologically lays out the events’ timeline, making it easy for the viewer to follow along with the case.
Although the audience already knows that Laci would not be discovered alive, it’s hard to deny the fact that you are going to still feel the whirlwind of emotions and that telltale lump in your throat once you reach the part where Laci and Conner’s remains are discovered. Then you’ll come to the disturbing realisation that Scott’s cold-hearted decision to end the life of his wife and unborn son is a tragedy that has left permanently scars on Laci’s family and friends.

It is better to walk away from a toxic relationship than stay because a toxic relationship will always end in the destruction or ruination of either one or both parties. Laci Peterson’s case comes as a warning to women all over the world to not be afraid and find the strength to walk away.
