It’s been quite a while since I’ve seen an honest to goodness action horror movie that’s heavy on blood and gore. Korean science fiction action thriller horror Project Wolf Hunting is directed by Kim Hong-sun and doesn’t spare the audience with its gruesomely bloody and terrifying cast performances. To say that I thoroughly enjoyed this film is an understatement.
Project Wolf Hunting has a huge cast, but you mainly need to pay attention to the Seo In-guk as Park Jong-doo, Jang Dong-yoon as Lee Do-il, Choi Gwi-hwa as Alpha and Sung Dong-il as Oh Dae-woong. The story begins in 2017 where a bunch of Korean criminals are being extradited from Manila, Philippines back to Busan, South Korea. Upon arrival at the airport, a citizen detonates a bomb that kills many. Flash forward to 2022, where more criminals are being extradited from Manila to Busan but this time for safety purposes, they are being transported via a 58,000-ton cargo ship named Frontier Titan. The only hitch is that cargo and prisoners are not the only thing that the ship is transporting.

Secretly, a pharmaceutical company named Aeon Genetics is transporting a human test subject code-named “Alpha” back to South Korea to run further tests on his anti-ageing abilities. Alpha was a Japanese prisoner of war during World War II. He was used as an experiment to create an enhanced form of soldiers more animalistic and sadistic than ever in an effort to tip the scales of the war. Hardened, murderous criminals and a super-killer hidden away in the bowels of the ship that make for a volatile mix. The law enforcement and crew on board are in way over their heads. When an escape riot ensues and the monster below awakes copious amounts of blood flows, and the violence is wanton and without sympathy.
The experimentation on people who are on the brink of death to create enhanced soldiers who have a penchant for wanton acts of violence is reminiscent of the popular science fiction action film Universal Soldier (1992) while the Alpha whose eyes have been stapled shut to enhance his infrared sensory abilities while he hunts for unsuspecting prey pulls inspiration from Predator (1987). The story has pretty decent development and surprising twists. You can even make a fun drinking game out of it. Every time someone bites it you take a shot (but don’t drink and drive please). The main cast performances may be over the top but it’s fun to watch the crazy emotions and adrenaline that flow during the more violent sequences of the film. One particularly noteworthy scene takes place in a walk-in freezer where the character has to hide among dead bodies in order to escape the Alpha. It’s absolutely nerve wrecking and terrifying; don’t miss it.

With a cliffhanger ending, the story is left open which makes it an incredibly tempting premise for a sequel. You shouldn’t let this one slip under the radar. It’s super fun to watch for those who like their action with a heavy dose of sci-fi horror on the side.
