Sommerleigh Pollonais, Horror Head Writer
Plot: U-Turn follows the life of Donna, a junior reporter who covers an incident on an abandoned highway where some people allegedly make an illegal u-turn. Strange things start to happen everyday as our protagonist slowly uncovers each insidious mystery.
Review: There are a lot and I mean A LOT of great foreign language horror movies, but sadly U-Turn isn’t one of them. One of Netflix’s latest originating from the Philippines, the story is similar to a hundred other Asian-based horror flicks. There’s a curse (in this case tied to an accident that happened at a u-turn section of a road) and anyone who is unfortunate enough to make said u-turn becomes the target of these angry spirits.

The actors do their best with the script and our lead Donna, played by Kim Chiu, is lovely and likeable enough. But the directing looks and feels amateurish and the scares are predictable as hell. Anyone who’s seen films like The Grudge, The Ring or any Asian horror with a ghost who hasn’t seen a hairdresser in years, will know the signs and what to expect.
Take my advice and make a U-Turn of your own. Instead might I recommend watching The Call, another Asian horror movie released on Netflix this week. I haven’t seen it yet, but fellow reviewer, Alice Oscura says it’s definitely worth checking out.
Sommer’s Score: 4.5 out of 10
