Caribbean’s First Sci Fi Movie ‘Trafik D’Info’ is a Creative Tale with Heart

Julien Neaves, Caribbean Head Writer

Background: Directed by Guadeloupe-born filmmaker Januk Stanislas, 2005 Sci Fi short Trafik D’Info (a creole term meaning “trade of information”) is set in a dystopian future where a group of rebels on a Caribbean island illegally trade information despite heavy government censorhip. The story follows one of the rebels, Jouwa, who is seeking to trade a vital piece of information.

Review: I have mentioned before of my great love for the science fiction genre and my passion for Caribbean film (“Cariwood” as I call it). So when I discovered the first Caribbean Sci Fi film (just reporting it as I read it, feel free to correct me on that one) I just had to check it out. And Trafik D’Info was a decent watch.

In just 11 minutes Stanislas is able to craft an intriguing world with some creative costuming, cool visual effects and colourful characters. There is also clever use of lighting and audio effects to add some thrills to the unseen government agents chasing the protagonist. And the theme of truth and knowing thyself is a resonant one, not only for Guadeloupe but the wider Caribbean and beyond.

As a Sci Fi and Caribbean film lover it was great uncovering this hidden gem.

Editor Jules’ Score: 8 out of 10
