Sommerleigh Pollonais, Horror Head Writer
Day 8/31: Evilspeak (1981)

Who made it?
Director: Eric West (Come out Fighting, The Iron Triangle)
What was it about?
Have you ever seen Full Metal Jacket? Well, this movie is kind of like that one but with more levitation and demon summoning. A young military cadet played by underrated character actor Clint Howard (Star Trek, Apollo 13, The Wraith) decides to get back at his bullies by summing a demon via his computer. It was the 80s, just go with it.
To be fair it’s a bit more complicated than that as Stanley (Howard) finds a book of satanic spells and uses the school’s computer to translate them. While I have heard of this movie, I only recently saw it (you can check it out over on YouTube) and it was right up my alley as it’s an 80s horror chock full of crazy effects, loads of gore and a stellar lead in Howard. The rest of the cast also deliver with other 80’s greats like RJ Armstrong who plays Sarge who hates the kids (if you could call a group of twenty-somethings kids) at the school and Charles Tyler as the demanding and demeaning Colonel.
Well-directed and paced, all in all Evilspeak is a great watch for any horror fan and a solid addition to your holiday watchlist.

Favourite Scene
The whole final act. Decapitation, impalements and for some reason a bunch of pigs. It’s bonkers in the best ways possible!
Fun Trivia
The title of the movie was derived from the phrase “computer-speak” a term used to describe the shorthand used by computer specialists.
