Sommerleigh Pollonais, Horror Head Writer
Plot: When a group of friends recklessly violates the sacred rule of tarot readings, they unknowingly unleash an unspeakable evil trapped within the cursed cards. One by one, they come face to face with fate and end up in a race against death.
Review: If I made a list of interchangeable horror movies, where you swap out one cast for another, one situation for another or one supernatural entity for another and still come up with the same result, Tarot would definitely make that list. If you’ve seen films like Ouija, Truth or Dare, Stay Alive or the host of others where the plot begins with a group of friends hanging out, finding some cursed object and playing a game that leads to them being picked off one by one, you’ve seen Tarot.

In this case, it’s a group of friends who, after discovering an ancient box of tarot cards, convince the one person in the group who “coincidentally” knows how to read them to tell everyone’s fortune. The cards are cursed, evil is unleashed and people die in extremely unspectacular fashion because CGI monsters will never be effective no matter how hard they try.
While I’ve seen my share of bad horror movies this year, Tarot has the distinction of being the most boring of the bunch, with predictable jump scares and story beats. It’s a shame really because the cast of young, mostly unknown actors (except for Jacob Batalon who plays Ned Leeds in the MCU) do feel like they’re trying their best to make the uninspired material work. But with cliché after cliché raining down on them, there was little hope of this movie delivering anything but boredom.

Tarot might be able to engage a pre-teen audience or scare viewers who have no real experience with the genre, but that’s about it. So, if you’re in the mood for the kind of movie you could play in the background while you’re doing the dishes or catching up on emails, the cards say Tarot is the perfect choice for you.
