Action Comedy ‘Ghosted’ Deserves to be Ghosted by Audiences

Sommerleigh Pollonais, Senior Writer

Plot: Cole falls head over heels for enigmatic Sadie, but then makes the shocking discovery that she’s a secret agent. Before they can decide on a second date, Cole and Sadie are swept away on an international adventure to save the world.

Review: On the surface Ghosted seems to have all the ingredients for a fun, breezy rom-com with action, the kind of movie you don’t even need to think about, you just need to enjoy. It stars two beautiful and charming leads in the form of Chris Evans and Ana de Armas (who previously teamed for action flick The Gray Man) and the premise is a little bit True Lies and a little bit Mr. and Mrs. Smith. The story, like any good action adventure, takes viewers globe-trotting to exotic locations. So, what exactly went wrong here, because Ghosted is as tepid as tap water.

When a man loves a woman, can’t keep his mind on nothing else, he’d travel the world, just to see her smile

Okay, that might be a bit harsh, but truthfully, I expected so much more from a movie with so much talent involved, including director Dexter Fletcher whose last film (I saw) was the top-tier music biopic Rocketman. The premise is straightforward enough with Chris Evans as Cole who, fresh off a break-up, he meets the alluring Sadie (Ana de Armas) and after a wonderful date (that’s date singular – keep that in mind) Cole decides to throw caution to the wind and tracks Sadie to London. He then decides (with the encouragement of his family no less) to hop on plane and fly out to find her…after ONE DATE!

Putting that crazy aside for a minute, Evans is mistaken for an international spy known only as The Taxman in what I can only assume is some sort of message about typical chauvinism because, predictably, Sadie is the elusive spy and the two are forced to stick together so they can save the world from Adrien Brody sneering at us in every scene.

So, you’re like an agent, agent?

I sound bitter I know, but after being one of the few people who genuinely enjoyed the above-mentioned The Gray Man, I was hoping this second team-up would of delivered on the laughs, action and of course tons of sizzling chemistry. Not that Evans and De Armas don’t have any heat between them (they’re nowhere near as bad as Duhamel and Lopez in Shotgun Wedding) it’s just that this movie feels like a first draft instead of a fully fleshed-out tale. And if you removed the big lead names, this would’ve easily been skipped over by most viewers for something with a bit more bite to it.

So, is there any reason to see Ghosted? Well, there are a couple of action sequences that added some much-needed spice to this weak sauce but other than that I would be lying to you if I said this was worth your time. You would be better off just rewatching Mr. and Mrs. Smith instead as the irony of giving a movie like this the title of Ghosted is, I wish I had done just that and ghosted this waste of my precious viewing time.
