Movie superstar Tom Cruise returned to theatres recently for action thriller Jack Reacher: Never Go Back. It is a sequel to 2012’s Jack Reacher and features the titular former military investigator who drifts from place to place helping folks and beating up bad guys. Think ‘The Littlest Hobo’ but with more gunfights.
In the sequel Jack joins army major Susan Turner, played by the lovely Colbie Smulders (The Avengers films, ‘How I Met Your Mother’), and the two try to unravel a military conspiracy. I will be moving into my review now but fear not there will not be any spoilers.
I was surprised by the first Jack Reacher as it was less action flick and more mystery thriller. And I really dug it. For Never Go Back, however, there is a greater emphasis on action that the mystery aspect. The pacing of the movie is well done, the fights are bone crunching and chases are quite intense. But it does fall into generic territory after a while.
Tom Cruise is a movie superstar and always throws himself into his roles, both physically and dramatically. His turn as Jack Reacher is the best part of the films and his stoic, lethal character is a throwback to the days of real action heroes. Smulders is decent though she could have had more to do. I thought Danika Yarosh, who plays a teenager in trouble, was charming. The baddies, though, are straight out of Villians ‘R’ Us.
In the end Never Go Back is a solid action thriller but is not anything that you have not seen before.
Rating: The film gets 2.5/4 broken limbs.
