‘Son of Zorn’ Premiere is a Crazy Cartoon/Sitcom Mash-up

In a television landscape flooded with sitcoms it is difficult for new shows to stand out. But it is hard not to notice Fox’s new series ‘Son of Zorn’ which features an animated He-Man type character trying to reconnect with his live action son and ex-wife in Orange County, California.

Sudeikis gets his He-Man on

Saturday Night Live alum and star of comedies like Horrible Bosses and Were the Millers Jason Sudeikis is the voice of Zorn, a muscle bound, golden sword wielding warrior from the island nation of Zephyria. Sudeikis is pitch perfect as the violent, boastful and out of his depth character and his dialogue is ripping.

In the premiere Zorn gets a reminder on his phone that it is the birthday of his estranged son Alangulon aka Alan (Johnny Pemberton). He journeys off to Orange County and the fish out of water hijinks begin from the plane ride and never stops. While the show is part animated the over the top violence and mature humour puts it in the adult viewing category.

I really don’t see what all the fuss is about

Rounding off the cast is Cheryl Hines (‘Curb Your Enthusiasm’, ‘Suburgatory’) as Zorn’s ex-wife Edie, and another SNL alum Tim Meadows as Edie’s fiancĂ© Craig, who is hilarious as an insecure online college professor.

The premiere pokes fun at both cartoon nostalgia and sitcoms and I had my share of laughs seeing Zorn at his job, threatening a waitress and buying his son a giant falcon in lieu of a car.

While the premeire episode was decent it did not blow me away or had me crying with laughter. But there was enough there for me to come back next week and check out the second episode.
