Starcrossed Gods and Epic Battles: Blood of Zeus Season 2

Sommerleigh Pollonais, Senior Writer

Blood of Zeus Season 2 continues the stories of the Greek gods. Their mythological drama and rivalries have stood the test of time itself and Netflix’s animated series continues to breathe fresh life into these ancient tales.

The second season continues directly where the first left off with Zeus (Jason O’Mara) “dead” and Heron (Derek Phillips) possibly taking his place. His brother Seraphim (Elias Toufexis) failing in his mission to destroy Olympus has been sent to the Underworld where Hades (Fred Tatasciore) works to convince him to assist in his plans to ensure he and his wife Persephone (Lara Pulver) are never parted again.

Of all the relationships that exists in Greek mythology, the love story of Hades and Persephone has been one of the most covered (and divisive) so it’s no surprise it takes centre stage here. Admittedly my enjoyment of this second season goes hand in hand with my love of this couple and their tale of tragic love is a great foundation for the bigger plot at hand. Love is blind and can be destructive when those involved are willing to ignore the damage their relationship can cause others in their orbit.

While the first season was in no doubt a strong one, this second outing is even more captivating. With the characters established, there’s now a feeling of invested interest in their fates. Coupled with even sharper animation and a thunderous soundtrack, it’s stories such as these that prove animation can be just as entertaining as live action —even more so when without being hampered by the logic of the “real world”, one can completely immerse oneself in every moment that unfolds.

With even more lore added (I’m a long-time fan of Greek mythology and yet I didn’t know of the Three Kings of Tartarus), more emotional moments and an epic final battle, Season 2 is wonderfully executed to set things up for the third season which was released this very week. I will be watching that this weekend so here’s hoping we get a finale worthy of the gods.

Sommer’s Score: 8 out of 10
