Back to the Start: Neon Girls Episode 2

Julien Neaves, Caribbean Head Writer

Plot: We learn more about the backstories of the trio of futuristic women bounty hunters and the team agrees to a $20 million mission.

Review: I was excited to return to the world of Neon Girls from Trinidad and Tobago production house GT Network and see more of the spunky titular bounty hunters, namely Nyx (Celene Larosa), Naaz (Leanna Julien) and Nova (Sarawati Ramlogan). With a minor spoiler alert, let’s dive in!

Now just hold still sugar

And Episode 2: Story Time does deliver on what it says on the cover. We learn about what is driving Nyx to hunt dangerous bad guys for a living and we get the origin stories for both Naaz and Nova. Celina Lyons from sister series Sister Bond appears as the tech for cybernetic Nova and she is cool, odd British old lady accent aside. And while I was glad for some fleshing out of the characters and there were some interesting aspects, at a point I was jonesing for some action.

Thankfully, we do get some action with Naaz and Nova (Nyx is strangely MIA) trying to get information from a petty criminal named “Tall Man” played by Irod Sama. I found Tall Man to be a fun rogue and his playful but tense interaction with the Neon Girls, especially Naaz, was my favourite part of the episode. Dele D Fraser also returns from Episode 1 as the girls’ mysterious handler, and he engages in some cryptic phone conversations which I found a bit difficult to follow.

TALL MAN: You look like you could do with a real man NAAZ: Of course. You know anyone?

While not as strong as the premiere and a bit action-lite, Episode 2 does build on the characters and entices the audience for what is to come.

Editor Jules’ Score: 6 out of 10
