Horror Comedy Fck’n Nuts: A Delightfully Creepy Fever Dream

Julien Neaves, Editor

Plot: A woman named Sandy becomes anxious when an enthusiastic suitor prepares to meet her strange parents.

Review: Fck’n Nuts (yes, that is the actual title) is a surrealist short by writer/director Sam Fox and she describes it as an “absurdist horror/comedy based on my personal experience growing up with my insane family as a young girl.” After watching the film, I would surmise that Fox had quite the strange childhood because this movie is supremely weird, and I kind of love it.

You know I’m not like other girls

I will not give out any more plot details than the opening synopsis as this is one of those films that it is best to go in completely blind and just enjoy the trippy ride. Everything here contributes to an unsettling and fever dream-like experience. The colour palette is garish, the music is disturbing, and the interior of the house is shrouded in mist and populated by creepy items. Maddie Nichols is great as the sweet and haunted Sandy who is dressed like she time travelled from the 50s, and Vincent Stalba brings a lot of plucky energy as her overly enthusiastic suitor Dan. And the tension leading up to the reveal of the parents is so thick you can cut it with a chainsaw. The reveal itself threw me for a loop and the ending was pitch perfect.

Fck’n Nuts, as the name suggests, is a pretty wild film. Atmospheric, disgusting, and unnerving, it is quite the unique horror comedy experience that packs in a lot in under 11 minutes.
