D-Grade Action Flick ‘The Collective’ is Collectively Abysmal

Sommerleigh Pollonais, Senior Writer

Plot: A young recruit to a mysterious agency of assassins finds himself going rogue on his first assignment tracking down a group of human traffickers.

Review: Lucas Till, Ruby Rose, Don Johnson, Tyrese Gibson and Paul Ben-Victor. Even if you don’t know the names by heart, I’m positive you’ll recognise the faces when you see them, and my only question is — did all of these people lose a bet? Were they all held at gunpoint or had their families threatened? Maybe everyone’s mortgage payments were due at the same time because for the life of me I can’t see why ANY of these people would star in this D-grade movie.

Tyrese looks Frustrated and Furious

Let’s put aside the awful script for a second, as with a bit of elbow grease they could’ve maybe got a mediocre/average decent story out of it, as the directing and set design here looks like it was done by someone working from a baby’s first movie kit! Now I’m not trying to shame them for having a small budget but there a tons of films out there that have been made on miniscule budgets that turned out amazing. This isn’t one of those movies.

Villain Miro, played by Ben-Victor, acts like he based his performance off an old 80’s schlock movie and his lair seems to be an empty warehouse (maybe the back of a Walmart or something). And none of the other locations are any better. And then there’s the action, if you can call it that. Every one of these actors have been in bigger productions so it’s not like we’re dealing with novices, yet there is no part of The Collective that looks professionally done.

So, how many more scenes do we have left Ruby? Five? Wow. Okay, let’s push through it

I would’ve laughed if it wasn’t painfully obvious this movie was meant to be taken seriously which is a shame because this could’ve been one of those “so bad it’s good” movies. Sadly, it’s just bad… really really bad. And the only question I’m left with is, “How EXACTLY did this movie get made?!”See for yourself if you don’t believe me but don’t say I didn’t warn you.

Sommer’s Score: 2 out of 10
