Sex, Lies and Psychics: Suriname Short The Fortuneteller

Julien Neaves, Caribbean Head Writer

Context: Long time Red Mango Readers (big up allyuh selves) will be familiar with my ongoing quest to review as much Caribbean content as possible and from as many Caribbean countries as possible. Well today I am glad to add Suriname to that list with the 2018 drama short The Fortuneteller produced by CDQUniversal. Now on to my Quick Bite review!

Review: Mary’s strange visions and a visit to a tarot reader makes her suspect that her smooth-talking boyfriend Marcus is being unfaithful. The film presents an intriguing premise, but the execution does fall short. On a positive note, the quality of the production is solid, which is not something you always find with Caribbean YouTube shorts. The actress playing Mary (I would name her, but the film doesn’t have credits) is very good and delivers a strong, impassioned performance. Probably a little too strong, as the rest of the cast, including the actor playing Marcus, are very flat and wooden by comparison. The plot is nothing groundbreaking and the psychic aspect does feel somewhat wasted, but there were a couple of decent twists that made it interesting. So, if you want a sexy drama with some edge and a great lead that is just above par, you might wish to pay a visit to The Fortuneteller.

Score: 5.5 out of 10
