Weird Paranormal Series ’28 Days Haunted’ is Frighteningly Subpar

Alice Oscura, Paranormal Investigations Head Writer

Plot: Three teams of Paranormal Investigators are put to the ultimate challenge when they have to investigate a haunted location for a full 28 days in order to test the viability of Ed and Lorraine Warren’s paranormal theory.

Review: One of Netflix’s Halloween releases for this year happens to be one of the weirdest paranormal series that I have ever seen in my entire life. I still have no idea if the series was meant to be taken seriously or just meant to be some kind of a paranormal reality show spoof. While the content is entertaining enough for the spooky season and the locations are genuinely haunted, there’s something very off with the entire execution of the series. Made up of just six episodes lasting roughly 30 minutes each, the gist of the series is meant to test a theory of the infamous paranormal power couple Ed and Lorraine Warren known as the 28-day cycle. The theory entails the Paranormal Investigators staying at a haunted location for at least 28 days in an effort to break into the thinning of the veil between the supernatural realm and the well our current reality.

But here’s the thing though—whilst I continue to have the utmost respect for the Warrens, I have always questioned the motives of their son-in-law Tony Spera who, alongside their daughter Judy, runs the Warren’s Occult Museum and is now the head of N.E.S.P.E.R (New England Society of Psychic Research). That dude gives me the weirdest vibes every time he pops up in the paranormal field. He never seems to be genuine.

Anyways, moving on with the series itself. Tony Spera and Paranormal Journalist Aaron Sagers are the narrators of the series and are shown to be observing each location remotely using an intense camera setup. The two give their final comments at the end of each episode noting their observations and such but it really doesn’t sound too scientific to me. It was just weird quite frankly.

Basically, the audience is going to see three teams of Paranormal Investigators sent to three different haunted locations without knowing the history of the properties. They are essentially cut off from outside communication with no internet, phones, or libraries within their reach which may affect the outcome or reaction to the investigations.

The interaction between the members of each team was a bit strange. I say this because some of the reactions felt like they were acting and internal conflicts were being forced out of the participants to add a dash of drama. The part that kept me entertained mostly was the reveal of the dark histories behind each location. One was in Colorado, The Lumbar Baron Inn, the other was in North Carolina, Madison Dry Goods Store, and the final location was in Connecticut, Captain Grant’s Inn.

After watching lots of paranormal shows over the years I can see what they were trying to achieve with this one, but I cannot honestly give them a pass. And the fact that Spera was in charge of this project is just another turn-off for me.

So, the final verdict on 28 Days Haunted? Well, for my fellow paranormal junkies out there, I would say stay clear of this one. However, if you’re just looking to kill some time it can be a suitable entertaining medium for the Halloween season.

Score: 3 out of 10
