Plot: Several reformed yet misunderstood criminal animals attempt to become good, with some disastrous results along the way.
Review: One of the things I love about Dreamworks Studios is how original each one of their movies are in terms of their animated style. From Kung Fu Panda to Megamind, they have a uniqueness all their own. And the same can be said about The Bad Guys. Colorful yet not overdone, the visual elements work great for this world and with a score that screams Ocean’s 11 (or in this case, Wolf’s 5) this is the type of movie that can easily be enjoyed by the whole family.

Of course the icing on the cake of any animated movie is the voice cast and this one is pitch perfect (pun intended). Sam Rockwell, who I adore in everything, plays Mr. Wolf, the leader of a group of “bad guys” who pull off heists and have a blast doing it. Rockwell was born to play the role of this charming rogue with a heart of gold and you only have to watch his dance moves to know this is all Sam! Rounding out the cast are Marc Maron (Glow, Joker) as Mr. Snake, Awkwafina (Shang Chi, Crazy Rich Asians) as Ms. Tarantula a.k.a Webs, Craig Robinson (Hot Tub Time Machine, Brooklyn Nine-Nine) as Mr. Shark and Anthony Ramos (In the Heights, Hamilton) as Mr. Piranha.
If you’re getting vibes of Quentin Tarantino’s Reservoir Dogs or Pulp Fiction, you’re not alone; honestly I would’ve never pictured any of QT’s movies working well in a G-rated setting but the inspiration is there and it absolutely works. Hell, I couldn’t even see a live-action version of The Bad Guys working, minus the talking animals of course.

The film’s lessons are simple enough for kids to understand and may be a good reminder for some of the adults in the audience as well. Never judge a book by its cover, some people deserve a second chance and piranhas fart when they’re nervous. I’m not sure about that last one, but it’s just weird enough to be true.
Sommer’s Score: 7 out of 10
