The Misadventures of ‘Super Single Cindy’ (Trinidad and Tobago)

Julien Neaves, Caribbean Head Writer

Disclaimer: Let me start off this review with a quick disclaimer. Cindy F. Daniel, who writes, produces, directs and stars in Trinidad and Tobago sketch comedy webseries Super Single Cindy is my cousin (wassup coz!). But not because she is my cousin means that her content will be getting any special treatment. Everyone gets judged fairly under the Red Mango Reviews sun (which is red of course, sorry Superman). With that out of the way, let’s get to the review.

Review: Daniel, (deep breath) is an actor, content creator, theatre producer, entertainment attorney and radio personality (exhale!). She appeared in Machel Montano musical comedy drama Bazodee, and short films The Weekend and Floating Into Fire. She stars as the titular Super Single Cindy who, according to the intro, is a strong, independent woman who “don’t need no man” but is also a “hopeless romantic”.

Cindy for Prime Minister!

The six sketches are mostly centered on Cindy going on dates or encountering potential love interests. Unfortunately for the SS Cindy, her Love Boat keeps hitting icebergs. From cheaters to cheapskates, from dummies to the deeply religious, poor Cindy can’t catch a break. Daniel is a hoot as the eye-rolling, fourth-wall breaking, man-hungry character and she is ably supported by fellow stage/screen actors such as Mark Nottingham and Kearn Samuel. The show also shakes things up with some very well done parodies.

A lot of the references are very Trinidadian but there is enough universal humour for anyone to enjoy. And with episode lengths ranging from a minute and a half to just over four minutes it’s a light watch that is heavy on the laughs. So do allow me to recommend spending some time with the perpetually unlucky in love Super Single Cindy.
