Plot: A bystander who intervenes to help a woman being harassed by a group of men becomes the target of a vengeful drug lord.
Review: You may notice the plot I gave for this movie is paper thin, which brings another movie with a similar vibe to mind, John Wick. And like old John, this is a movie that doesn’t require a heavy plot because once you’ve seen what Hutch Mansell (Bob Odenkirk) is capable of, you’ll quickly push everything else aside and enjoy the utter chaos and amazing destruction of Nobody.
Directed by IIya Naishuller (Hardcore Henry) and written by Derek Kolstad, the mind behind the John Wick films, Nobody is another fun action flick that delivers a likeable hero who seems like an ordinary man living his ordinary life until something happens that “triggers” his old ways. Bob Odenkirk, most famously known for playing shady lawyer Saul Goodman in Breaking Bad and spin-off series Better Call Saul, is pitch perfect as Hutch. His role here made me think of SNL’s Bill Hader in HBO’s dark comedy crime series Barry. You don’t think of these guys when you think badass action star, and yet they both deliver in spades.
It’s hard not to compare this movie with John Wick while you’re watching it to the point where I wondered if this took place in the same universe (it doesn’t, but the writer is open to it). The action sequences are flawless as you see it all in their wonderfully destructive glory. And that soundtrack had me reaching for Shazam so I could add these great tunes to my playlists.
Like most of us Hutch is a man stuck in the same day-to-day routines. And when this happens you sometimes wish you could just let loose and…well, not kill a bunch of folks, but maybe destroy some stuff with zero consequences. You know, “Hulk-out” if you will.
The comedic moments balance well with the drama and action and the rest of the cast, even though they are minimally used, all handle their parts with full gusto and seemed like they were enjoying themselves. This is especially true of Christopher Lloyd as Hutch’s dad, a total badass who most definitely proves age is nothing more than a state of mind. And the final throwdown is one that will leave you begging for more of this world. And I for one hope that like John Wick, we haven’t seen the last of Hutch Mansell.
