Outback Mystery Thriller ‘The Dry’ is a Diamond in the January Film Desert

Sommerleigh Pollonais, Senior Writer

Plot: Aaron Falk returns to his drought-stricken hometown to attend a tragic funeral. But his return opens a decades-old wound —the unsolved death of a teenage girl.

Review: Finding a great movie in January is like finding a diamond in a mountain of sand. The Dry is that diamond folks.

When you see someone burning the shrimp on the barbie!

A slow-burn thriller set in the outback of Australia, The Dry stars Eric Bana (Hulk, Troy) as a cop who returns to his hometown at the behest of the parents of his best friend, who is accused of killing his family and then himself. I love these types of thrillers because when they’re done right they pull you in and never let go.

Bana is perfectly cast here. He portrays the character in a quiet but driven manner that allows the story room to breathe. As a matter of fact, all the actors here do top notch work, and because I wasn’t that familiar with most of them it allowed me to really immerse myself in their performances.

I walk a lonely road
The only one that I have ever known
Don’t know where it goes
But it’s home to me, and I walk alone

You’ll think you have it all figured out, but the direction and writing does a solid job of throwing you off the scent, keeping you on your toes and invested in the outcome of the mystery.

The Dry may not be for everyone, but if you enjoy a thriller that takes its time, utilises its isolated yet somehow beautiful locations in smart ways, and doesn’t think it needs to hold your hand and explain every move it makes, you should definitely check this one out.

Sommer’s Score: 6.5 out of 10
