Plot: After a one-night stand a successful married man finds himself entangled in a cunning police detective’s latest investigation.
Review: Fatale looked to be like so many psycho-sexual thrillers that came before it — Obsession, Basic Instinct and, the mother of them all, Fatal Attraction, all have that mix of thrills and sensuality that have made them into the kind of guilty pleasures fans of these types of films enjoy.
But just like their more G-rated cousin, the romantic comedy, these types of movies require a very important element to make them work — Chemistry. Without the type of off-the-charts chemistry that makes viewers forget they’re basically watching a soap opera with nudity, all you’re left with is a boring slogfest of a film. And that, my lovely peoples, is a big no-no!
Michael Ealy (Think Like a Man/Barbershop) and Hilary Swank (The Hunt/Boys Don’t Cry) are supposed to be our Michael Douglas and Glenn Close here. Two people who have a one night stand, only to cross each other’s paths later on. I’ve seen more chemistry between peanut butter and jelly. I never bought into these two hooking up, and, to add to the lack of sexual energy in this movie, ALL of the actors here are one-note, bland and utterly forgettable.
Now maybe if we had a compelling thriller to fall back on, I could recommend this. But the plot is a mess of ideas that make zero sense and makes our leading man seem like an idiot. All his problems could’ve been solved by simply taking the “evidence” he had and going to the police. Instead, he chooses to handle things differently and nearly ends up dead for it. It was absolutely the dumbest conclusion I’ve seen to a movie in ages, and I’ve seen The Last Jedi.
These types of sexy thrillers can be mindless fun, but Fatale fails to deliver in both the “sexy” and the “thriller” categories. So go watch any thriller from the 90s or 2000s instead. Even the worse of them would be better than this.
