Horror Flick ‘The Empty Man’ Trips Over Its Overstuffed Plot

Sommerleigh Pollonais, Horror Head Writer

Plot: On the trail of a missing girl, an ex-cop comes across a secretive group attempting to summon a terrifying supernatural entity.

Review: The Empty Man, or as I like to think of him, Slender Man’s cousin, is a strange sort of movie. On the one hand, it has solid acting, an intriguing mystery and some well-thought out scares. On the other hand, it tries so hard to be complex it ends up leaving you with more questions than answers.

No, my name isn’t ‘Old Man Logan.’ What the heck kind of name is that?

Actor James Badge Dale (The Departed, Iron Man 3) is doing his best to make more of this horror movie than what’s on paper. He plays the lead James who’s hired to find a missing girl after she and her friends decide to do what all teens do in these movies – dare each other to summon an entity called The Empty Man. If you’ve seen all the other “Man” based movies, you know what happens next. Still, I give them points for at least trying to come up with something different with the entity being more complex than just a dude/dudette who’s been cursed. Problem is, they go a little TOO overboard with this and what we’re left with is a muddled existential mess of a story that just doesn’t add up.

I don’t like recommending you skip movies, because everyone’s opinions can be different, so feel free to check out The Empty Man if you wish. Just avoid blowing into empty bottles at midnight and you should be fine.

That last sentence will make more sense after you’ve seen the movie.

Sommer’s Score: 5 out of 10
