Sommerleigh Pollonais – Horror Head Writer
This ode to 80s revenge horror movies directed by Stanislav Kapralov tells the story of a young couple who sneak into a restricted area called Black Ridge in Georgia (the country, not the state), so they can snowboard. They get separated and the woman Mia (Ukrainian actress Ivanna Sakhnho from Pacific Rim: Uprising) tries to find her boyfriend Max (Spanish-American actor Alex Hafner from Ridley Scott’s 2013 crime thriller The Counselor), while desperately trying to stay ahead of a black masked killer on a snowmobile.
I had this one on my watchlist for a while now, as the trailer looked intense and a killer chase through the snowy mountainside looked like fun. Sadly, Let It Snow, while beautiful to look at with its snowy vistas, was way too derivative of the genre, making it predictable to the last scene. There is a bit of a surprise during the mid-credits, but it honestly had zero impact on the story as a whole.
Our main characters Mia and Max aren’t interesting in the least, and come across more like your average Americans who think they know best no matter what the locals are saying. There’s this whole subplot with the boyfriend insisting they go to Black Ridge because he wants to propose there, but the chemistry between the two is lukewarm at best, and I never really cared enough about them to be invested in their survival. Not a good thing, when these are you’re only real characters.
The main issue with this movie is the lack of kills. I know this sounds a bit psychotic, but we are talking about a throwback to slasher flicks of the 80s and 90s, so you need that body count to keep things interesting. This was basically a cat and mouse game between our final girl, or in this case only girl, and the killer (whose identity, by the way, is the easiest thing to figure out if you’re paying attention). There’s nothing worse than a boring slasher movie and this my friends, was boring.
