Sommerleigh Pollonais – Senior Writer
I’ve never personally experienced snow, at least not yet, but it seems like something than can go from beautiful to terrible in no time flat. And the couple in Centigrade learn that lesson the hard way.
Inspired by true events, the film tells the story of a couple who decide to pull aside during a snow storm on their way to the wife’s book signing. They fall asleep and end up getting trapped in their car and have to fight to survive.

Stories like this one require a couple of things to truly draw you in, namely building tension and a continuous sense of both hopelessness and hope. Unfortunately the pacing and the choice by the director to keep showing us the outside of the car negates these things. Then there’s the acting. Compare this to a movie like Buried. I was completely pulled in to that film’s claustrophobic setting, yet always held on to the hope of rescue because I was sucked in by Ryan Reynolds’ performance and his character’s backstory. Here I just never truly cared for this couple, and the movie didn’t give me enough information on their relationship for me to get invested in their survival.
The tedious pacing was also detrimental. Compare this movie to Frozen (the one without the singing snowman) and you’ll instantly see what I’m talking about. Centigrade might be based on real events but this is one case where a bit more fiction would’ve been appreciated.
