Awkward Religious Comedy Yes, God, Yes is no American Pie: Quick Bite Review

Sommerleigh Pollonais – Senior Writer

Yes, God, Yes is one of those movies that some of us will relate to a lot more than others.

It tells the story of a Catholic teenager who gets sent to Christian camp after a certain rumor about her gets back to her parents and teachers. She’s supposed to learn how to suppress her urges to avoid eternal damnation, but instead discovers she’s not the only one with a secret or two.

Mother Agnes! Alice is touching her ‘no no’ place!

This small budget indie movie is actually based off of a short film of the same name that came out in 2017. And to be honest, if you’ve seen that one, this feature length film doesn’t really add much to the tale.

The strength of this version is most definitely in the performance of lead Natalia Dyer (Stranger Things) who manages to not just carry the entire movie, but make for a believable, naive and sweet teenager struggling with her sexual side (Natalia is actually 25 in real life). And the story at play might not have been as engaging as it was in lesser hands.

Hello! There will be nun of that behaviour! Get it? Nun of that? You get it

Regrettably, there isn’t that much else to say about Yes, God, Yes. The story could’ve benefited from having more than one character’s story told, or maybe a bit more of the awkward and comedic elements, that would naturally go along with teenagers in situations like this one.

It’s a movie that will have adults who grew up with similar religious teachings nodding along as they walk down memory lane. But for others who came into this thinking it’s gonna be another raunchy, teenaged movie along the lines of American Pie or Superbad (the trailer is a tad misleading) well all I can say is, they can’t all be filled with f-bombs and boobs you heathens!

Rating: 5.5 out of 10
