My Spy Quick Bite

Sommerleigh Pollonais – Senior Writer

Even before the quarantine, I noticed this film kept getting pushed back. That’s never a good sign, but, to be fair, My Spy is no different than any other muscle-bound-movie star-coupled-with-a-kid trope we’ve seen in the past.

This inexplicable genre of movie started all the way back in the 90’s with Kindergarten Cop (yeah that’s how it’s spelled) then wrestling star Hulk Hogan starred in Mr. Nanny and kept going with the likes of Vin Diesel in The Pacifier, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson in The Tooth Fairy and now we have Dave Bautista fresh off Guardians of the Galaxy playing the strongman with a soft spot for a street smart kiddo named Sophie, played by young actress Chloe Coleman.

Did you know if you stand really still, you can turn invisible?

Like all of the other films listed, this is a by-the-numbers story that goes about as much as you expect it to. But to its credit, the chemistry between Bautista and his little leading lady is solid and the cast of actors seem like they’re having fun with their roles. I was also surprised from time to time at some of the more adult tones that would pop up here and there in terms of the action and some of the darker jokes.

My Spy is a simple, straight forward movie and its ability to entertain you will probably rely on how much you enjoyed other films like it. For me, it was an easy entertaining way to pass some time.

Also, if we’re rating these, Kindergarten Cop is still the best of the bunch.

Score: 6 out of 10
