Sonic the Hedgehog Quick Bite

Sommerleigh Pollonais – Senior Writer

If anyone had told me the first good movie I would see in 2020 would be a video game adaptation, I would’ve told them “I see you’re really enjoying that legalised weed”. But color me surprised, Sonic the Hedgehog is actually a fun movie!

I know Sonic-Fu

Even without the revamped design of everyone’s favorite Sega mascot, the plot is well executed and entertaining. The sound design should please fans of the game, as every time Sonic ran through a ring it brought wonderful memories of the game to mind. Voice acting by Ben Schwartz as Sonic is witty and fast paced (very reminiscent in style to what Ryan Reynolds did with Pikachu in Detective Pikachu) and Jim Carrey as Dr. Robotnik is a blast to watch, as he hams it up in all the best ways. As a matter of fact, all of the main actors involved are giving good performances and seem to be having fun with their roles.

The story, while derivative of every kids movie you’ve seen, is well paced and simple enough to allow audience members to just sit back, relax and enjoy this visually fun ride.

Maybe it’s because I went in with zero expectations, maybe it’s because the last few movies I’ve seen were all duds, but whatever the case maybe, Sonic The Hedgehog, like Detective Pikachu (and I’ll even throw Tomb Raider in the mix) proves it IS possible, to adapt a video game to the big screen in a way that’s both respectful to fans and new audiences alike.

SCORE: 7 out of 10
