Top 10 Scariest Clowns Ever (featuring Moviejunkies)

EDITOR’S NOTE: Supernatural horror film It, based on the eponymous Stephen King novel, has been scaring up millions at the box office and breaking records since its release. The movie features a shape shifting child killing demon that appears primarily as a twisted clown called Pennywise.

In honour of It and for our second collaboration with Moviejunkies we will be ranking the scariest clowns ever. Take it away Moviejunkies!

Coulrophobia: an irrational fear of clowns. If this is a phobia you suffer from, then going to the cinemas is gonna suck for you, as Stephen King’s It hits the big screens and a certain killer clown is about to become the stuff of nightmares, for an entirely new generation.

With this in mind, I give you my list of the TOP 10 SCARIEST CLOWNS EVER!

#10 Ronald McDonald (McDonald’s mascot)

Clown 10

Don’t Laugh! You just have to look at one of those McDonald commercials to see Ronald is the king of evil clowns. That creepy smile, those dead eyes. I swear if you stare at him long enough, your soul get’s sucked into a Quarter Pounder with Cheese. He probably uses the blood of children for his hair dye!

“I’ll trade you your soul for a Happy Meal!”

#9 John Wayne Gacy (Real life serial killer and clown enthusiast)

Clown 9

Model citizen, devoted father, loving husband and serial killer John Wayne Gacy – a man with over 30 dead men and boys entombed in the crawl space underneath his family house.

The ORIGINAL killer clown. Numerous movies and tv shows have been done on this crazy bastard. Gacy’s on this list because he used to dress as a clown for kids birthday parties and charitable events. He loved clowns so much, he painted them all the time. So what did he call his clown persona? Pogo the Clown.

I’m just gonna take my nieces and nephews to Chuck E. Cheese and call it a day.

#8 Clown from Clown (2014)

Clown 8

A little boy’s birthday party gets ruined when his entertainment (clown) cancels. His father finds a clown suit and becomes the new entertainment but something is weird about it; there is an evil curse and it won’t come off.

Why do people INSIST on reading/watching/wearing strange crap the find in their attic or basement or at a garage sale??? I guess if they didn’t we would never get the creepy movies.

While this Clown has no name (the Dad’s name is Kent if that helps), it’s the stuff of nightmares. Here’s some SPOILER ALERT trivia for you. It’s not a clown costume, it’s the skin and hair of a demon, sewn into one. Eeeeewwww.

Looks like Ronald McDonald on meth.

#7 Stitches the Clown from Stitches (2012)

Clown 7

A clown comes back from the dead to haunt those who took his life during a fatal party mishap.

Stitches may look more like a homeless man dressed in a clown’s garbage than an actual clown but that doesn’t make him any less deadly. His kills are over the top, brutally comic and full of goofy gore but for this clown, it’s no laughing matter!

Giving a whole new meaning to Snitches get Stitches.

#6 31/House of 1000 Corpses

Clown 6 part 2

(31) Five carnival workers are kidnapped and held hostage in an abandoned, Hell-like compound where they are forced to participate in a violent game, the goal of which is to survive twelve hours against a gang of sadistic clowns.

Clown 6

(HOTC) Two young couples traveling across the backwoods of Texas searching for urban legends of murder end up as prisoners of a bizarre and sadistic backwater family of serial killers.

This one’s a tie. Both movies come to us from the demented mind of Rob Zombie and they both have clowns with a demented sense of humor. Doom Head (31) and Captain Spaulding (House of 1000 Corpses) will go to any length for a laugh, at your expense of course.

These jokes will leave you in pieces. Literally.

#5 Toy clown from Poltergeist (1982)

Clown 5

A family’s home is haunted by a host of ghosts.

In a movie full of memorable scares it would have to be a goodie to go down in scary clown history. Ask anyone about scary clowns and you can bet your big red nose, the toy clown from Poltergeist is gonna get mentioned.

You know it’s memorable when it’s parodied in other films.
This clown was creepy from the word go. Brightly coloured and huge enough to sit in a chair. Something about it felt out of place in a little boy’s room, so when you looked up, and realized it was no longer in that chair…

I wonder where this ended up, after the movie wrapped? You know what, never mind, I don’t wanna know.

#4 Twisty the Clown from American Horror Story: Freakshow

Clown 4

Twisty is a disgraced clown who uses increasingly twisted methods to regain his position as an entertainer of children. He is a character in American Horror Story portrayed by John Carroll Lynch. He wears a makeshift prosthetic mask nearly as terrifying as the disfigured face beneath.

Twisty is a disfigured serial killer, a ghost and a clown. Yep, he’s a triple threat!

When it comes to creepy clowns, clowns that stick in your mind, no matter how old or young you are when you see them, it’s all about the visuals. And Twisty has a face and a look that will stick with you for life.

Sometimes the scariest thing in world, is a Smile.

#3 Killer Klowns from Killer Klowns from Outer Space (1988)

Clown 3

Aliens who look like clowns come from outer space and terrorize a small town.

No I didn’t spell it wrong. That’s Klowns with a K. K for Killer good time, which is what these aliens have when they go on a spree, turning people into cotton candy and eating them.

Yes, it’s a ridiculous as it sounds but it’s also funny, memorable and at times, terrifying. If you haven’t seen it I’m gonna be dropping a SPOILER here, so be warned.

My favourite scary clown moment: One of the alien clowns kills the sheriff and turns him into a human ventriloquist dummy, using the tendons inside his throat and body, to make him ‘talk’. It’s dark. It’s funny and it’s a perfect clown kill, if I’ve ever seen one.

“Say hello to my little friend”

#2 Pennywise from IT (1990/2017)

Clown 2

In 1960, seven pre-teen outcasts fight an evil demon who poses as a child-killing clown.

Tim Curry took what was ultimately an ordinary looking clown suit, made of yellow, red, white and blue, and created one of the most iconic clowns to ever exist. Who could ever forget that laugh?

I have friends who told me they couldn’t take a shower for a week after that particular scene. Not to mention the ones who had the existing phobias jacked up to 11 after seeing Pennywise do his thing.

Now we have Bill Skarsgard doing his version and from early reviews, his Pennywise is gonna keep therapists in business for a long time.

Don’t forget your floaties!!! You’re gonna need them…

#1 The Joker from Batman franchise

Clown 1

They don’t call him The Clown Prince for nothing!

He’s killed more people than everyone on this list combined. He’s had many looks over the years and is so unstable and unpredictable, even the one person who loved him had to throw in the towel; he cut off his own face and wanted to do the same to her, so it’s understandable.

Possibly immortal, genius intellect combined with a level of psychosis that would probably scare the devil himself the Joker is my pick for the Scariest Clown of all Time.

And that’s it guys! My TOP 10 SCARIEST CLOWNS. Did I leave anyone out that you think is scarier? Comment below and get ready to Float down here when you check out It in theatres.
