The robots in disguise are back with the trailer for Transformers: The Last Knight, the fifth film in the series which is scheduled for release June next year.
The trailer (see below) has a cool voice over by Sir Anthony Hopkins (who appears in the film), some moody synth music, space scenes and Autobot on Autobot battles. There is a large ship which I hope is Unicron, the planet-sized planet eating Transformer. The series has been a hit at the box office but the quality has mostly varied between average and abysmal. I am cautiously optimistic about The Last Knight.
With the new trailer it is as good a time as any to count down all the previous five Transformers movies. So with a huge SPOILER ALERT let us transform and roll out!
#5 Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen (2009)

After the fun and exciting original Transformers we got the movie we neither wanted nor deserved – Revenge of the Fallen. Aside from one good Optimus fighting in the forest scene there is nothing else redeemable about this movie. Sam and Mikaela’s relationship is played out, the new Autobots and Decepticons are forgettable, the plot is a complicated mess and the confusing action scenes play out like watching a blender full of nuts and bolts. Added to the mix are offensive black stereotype Autobots and a giant Decepticon with testicles. Yes, you read that right, testicles. Even the multitude of explosions could not hide the giant pile of craptitude that this movie was.
#4 Transformers: Age of Extinction (2014)

I watched the Transformers cartoon when I was a young boy and some of my favourite characters were the Dinobots. So imagine my excitement when I heard that they were appearing in a live action Transformers movie. Then imagine my disappointment when they were turned into mindless beasts who were bullied by Optimus and appeared in about 10 minutes of a three hour film!
And that run time is one of Extinction’s biggest problems. Shia and his LaBeouf-ing were thankfully replaced by Mark Wahlberg and his derp face and overall the humans were less annoying but not by much. And the story was not bad by Transformers standards but due to the length the plot started to meander. But oh my goodness this movie dragged on FOREVER and wore out its welcome after about the first hour and half. Quantity does not always equal quality Michael Bay, and it definitely did not in this case. Keep it tight, light and fun not long, drawn and dull.
#3 Transformers: Dark of the Moon (2011)

After the utter rubbish that was Revenge of the Fallen the franchise redeemed itself a lot with Dark of the Moon. We had a much tighter plot, better shot action scenes where you could actually see what was happening, and a wonderful voice role by Leonard Nimoy as the traitorous Sentinel Prime. The Decepticon attack does rip off The Avengers movie and it does get ridiculous at times but it is still an entertaining watch, and the second best live action Transformers flick.
#2 Transformers (2007)

The first live action Transformers remains the best. It featured ground breaking effects, thrilling action sequences, a basic plot and comedy that (mostly) hits the mark. The Autobots and Decepticons we loved from the animated series were brought to life in spectacular style and our childhood dreams came true. The movie was a fun time and infinitely rewatchable. If only Bay and company had kept to the formula and not made the sequels unnecessarily bloated and overly complicated.
#1 The Transformers: The Movie (1986)

Surprise, surprise. The best Transformers film is actually the animated movie which came out 30 years ago. I already did a post talking about how fantastic it is (see link below) but suffice it to say that this film captured the cool characters and epic action of the animated series, while adding a darker tone and taking the story to intergalactic heights. It may be old and did not make much money at the box office but it remains the definitive Transformers movie. Will The Last Knight dethrone it next year? It could but I doubt it.
