While considering the next movie for my weekly “Back in Times Thursday” feature a co-worker mentioned 1979 cult classic action thriller The Warriors.
But before I could put pen to paper (or rather finger to keyboard) I read that Marvel golden bros. Joe and Anthony Russo, the directors of Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Captain America: Civil War, were developing a TV series based on the property for Paramount and Hulu.
Now I usually view television reboots of movie properties with a degree of apprehension but I do feel a little bit better about the super talented Russo bros. in the driver’s seat. And television series like MTV’s Scream: The Series or Syfy’s Twelve Monkeys show with good writing and cast a film concept can be adequately fleshed out into a full TV season.
But back to the film concept in question. The original film, based on the Greek story “Anabasis”, tells the story of the titular New York City gang seeking to return to their home turf of Coney Island after being framed for the murder of a respected gang leader during a gang summit. The leather clad Warriors must make their way through a gauntlet of various colourful gangs, cops and other dangers.
Now it has been years since I have seen the movie but I remember enjoying the action, thrills and, most of all, all the weird gangs. You had the crazy baseball gangs, the all female gang and even a gang of mimes. It was like a comic book come to life and our heroes were battling groups of villains with matching costumes.
According to wikipedia there are a whopping 21 gangs in the film alone. That is more than enough to build up a mythology for a television series. And according to reports the hour long episodes will have the Russo bros’ “own unique brand of grit, pulp, sex and violence”. Sounds like an interesting show to me. No word yet on when it will drop though.
