Game of Thrones: Top 5 contenders for the Iron Throne

We had the finale of Game of Thrones Season 6 last Sunday “The Winds of Winter” and it was a blockbuster and a half. But two major developments in that episode had ye olde mental juices turning about who we could see end up sitting on the Iron Throne at the end.

So I shall issue a SPOILER ALERT here for anyone who has not seen the finale. Still here? Okay, let’s proceed.

The season ended with the diabolical Cersei Lannister naming herself Queen and sitting upon the Throne. But I seriously doubt she will remain there until the show ends in two seasons and will probably Queen-slayed at some point.

So here are my Top 5 contenders to end the show seated comfortably (or uncomfortably, have you seen that thing?) on the Iron Throne of the Seven Kingdoms:

Do you like my crown? Made it myself
Do you like my crown? Made it myself

#5 Euron Greyjoy

The recently crowned ruler of the Iron Islands has announced his plan to offer ships to Daenerys and marry the Queen of Dragons. But his nephew and niece Yara and Theon, whom is he planning to hunt down and murder, have already made that deal, so grumpy unc is crap out of luck.

And I have a feeling he will be killed in a ship battle at some point.

Likelihood: Nope

#4 Petyr “Littlefinger” Baelish

Who knew the grand schemer had his sights set on no less than the Iron Throne, and with no less than Sansa Stark at his side? I can see Littlefinger plotting for the next two seasons but eventually his misdeeds will catch up with him and he’ll get run through with a sword or beheaded.

And to end the series with him on the Iron Throne would piss off legions of fans.

Likelihood: Almost nil

The one bastard to rule them all...
The one bastard to rule them all…

#3 Jon Snow

In the finale our favorite know nothing bastard was hailed as “The King of the North” although somewhat reluctantly on his part. He is of the bloodline of both the Starks and the Targaryen so he has a strong claim on the throne.

But Jon is more of a warrior than a leader – his wild antics during the Battle of the Bastards is good evidence of that. And while I believe he may be “the Prince that was promised” and will defeat the Night’s King and the White Walkers, his final destiny may be as a King’s Hand and not a king himself.

Likelihood: Average

How many goats did my dragons kill this time...
How many goats did my dragons kill this time?

#2 Daenerys Targaryen

Daenerys of House Targaryen, the First of Her Name, Daenerys Stormborn, Dany, The Unburnt, Mhysa
The Queen Across the Sea, The Silver Queen, The Beggar Queen, The Dragon Queen, yadda yadda yadda. On her litany of names alone Dany should finally rule Westeros.

As we saw in the finale she has armies, ships, allies and three very deadly dragons and has FINALLY left Meereen. She certainly has the power to take the throne for herself and many fans would love to see her end up on top.

But this is Game of Thrones and fans do not always get what they want. Dany may be the obvious answer for the final ruler of the Seven Kingdoms but the showrunners could have a major twist up their sleeve.

Likelihood: High

Under my rule our main import will be wine!

#1 Tyrion Lannister

Another fan favorite, of all my five picks Tyrion is the character who has best shown that he has the leadership skills to make a wise, fair and just ruler. It would be a classic Game of Thrones twist and a final way to upend everyone’s expectations before the final curtain.

And how awesome would it be to have the smallest character on the show become the ruler of all. The answer is VERY AWESOME!

Likelihood: Who knows? But what a twist it will be!

So who do you think will finally end up on the Iron Throne? Feel free to comment below.
