Game on!
So news has dropped that Disney will be giving us a sequel to 3D animated fantasy comedy Wreck-it-Ralph (2012). The film, which was nominated for a Golden Globe and an Academy Award for best animated feature, tells the story of Ralph, an 8-bit arcade game villain who wants to turn his life around by becoming a hero.
Disney has officially announced the sequel for 2018 and it will again feature the voice talents of John C. Reilly (Ralph) and Sarah Silverman (Vanellope). But this time the characters go from game hopping in an arcade to THE INTERNET!
The first movie was fun, colourful, charming, had a lot of heart and many winks, nods and full on character cameos from beloved video games like Street Fighter 2, Q-Bert, Pac-Man and Dance Dance Revolution.
For the sequel we can expect a whole lot more video game cameos. So here is my Top 7 most wanted video game characters:
#7 Sonic the Hedgehog
I know what you’re thinking – we had a glimpse of Sonic in the last film. Yeah, but that was just a glimpse. I want a bit more of the speedy blue hero even if it’s him challenging Vanellope to a race before running off.
#6 Mario
Returning director Rich Moore reported that he is in talks with Nintendo to have everyone’s favourite video game plumber appear in the new movie. And it would only be fitting that the iconic character appear if only for the briefest of cameos. He could give Ralph a fire flower or a mushroom or something and then hijinks could ensue.
We want Snake. Snake. Snaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaake!
#5 Solid Snake (Metal Gear Solid franchise)
Now we’re getting into the less obvious characters. Imagine a stealth section where Ralph has to sneak through an area together with Snake. And imagine Ralph getting caught over and over again and Snake becoming increasingly frustrated until he shouts “Ralph. Ralph. Ralphhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh”. Hilarious!
#4 Samus Aran (Metroid franchise)
I can see the intergalactic bounty hunter as a best bud for Jane Lynch’s character Sgt Calhoun and the two could have a nice girl power vibe going. And if there is a good fan reaction we can actually stir up interest in a Metroid live action film. Hope springs eternal.
#3 Master Chief (Halo franchise)
While I could see Samus as Sgt Calhoun’s bff I can see Master Chief as a potential love interest. Imagine Felix feeling outmanned and outgunned by the super soldier and going out of his way to prove how tough he is to his wife. And then at the end we can have Calhoun telling Felix that she loves him just the way he is. Awwww.
#2 Kratos (God of War franchise)
I can feel your eyebrows raising but here me out. While the uber-violent god slayer will not be allowed to rip off heads and splatter bodies (this is a Disney film after all) just imagine a quick cameo with him smashing up the place and Ralph and Vanellope slowly and carefully making their exit. It would be a gut buster.
#1 Link (The Legend of Zelda franchise)
When I heard that the new film would take place in the internet I imagined that most of the action would be in a MMORPG setting a la World of Warcraft just as the first film centered on the kart racer Sugar Rush. And who better to guide Ralph on his quest that the reticent adventurer Link. He could even hand him a sword and a piece of paper with the words “it’s not safe to go alone, take this”. The jokes write themselves.
