Return of the Sith: Vader is back for Rogue One

We will know the power of the Dark Side!

Everyone’s favorite Sith Lord Darth Vader will be returning for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, the first anthology film in the franchise which is scheduled for release this December.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy confirmed that Vader would appear in the film and would again be voiced by James Earl Jones. The actor’s rich, deep voice is a huge part of why the character became one of the most iconic villains in film history; American Film Institute has him ranked as number three after Hannibal Lecter and Norman Bates.

Jones voiced Vader in the original trilogy, Episode III: Revenge of the Sith and also made guest appearances on the ongoing animated series Star Wars Rebels.

Kennedy said that Vader will be used “sparingly” in Rogue One but will “loom large” at a “key strategic moment”. Before I read the article I figured that you would not have seen him much in the new film, which is a good thing because you do not want him overpowering the story. The main villain appears to be Director Krennic (pictured below) who is played by Australian actor Ben Mendelsohn (The Dark Knight Rises, Exodus: Gods and Kings).

Rogue One is set between Episodes III and IV and tells the story of a group of rebels coming together to steal the plans for the first dreaded Death Star. The rebel heroes include Jyn Erso (English actress Felicity Jones), Clone Wars veteran Saw Gerrera (Forest Whitaker), scientist and Jyn’s father Galen Erso (Hannibal’s Mads Mikkelsen) and K-2S0, a Rebel-owned Imperial enforcer droid (Firefly’s Alan Tudyk).

Reports of reshoots on the film may have had some people concerned but I am enjoying the boots on the ground, Dirty Dozen in space feel from the teaser trailer (see below), and I’m hopeful that the Force will be strong with it.
