Judgment is coming: Dredd 2 confirmed!

Fantastic news folks! A sequel to 2012 science fiction action film Dredd is officially in development.

Actor Karl Urban (reboot Star Trek movies), who played the titular Judge Dredd in the original film, announced that Dredd 2 is in development during a panel at Denver Comic Con; no word yet on a release date. To quote the Kool-Aid guy “oh yeah”.

Now if you have not seen Dredd or are not familiar with the character, who first appeared way back in 1977 in the British sci fi comic strip 2000 AD, you may be wondering what all the fuss is about.

Firstly the setting: in a dystopian future where most of the world is an irradiated wasteland called “Cursed Earth” civilisation is relegated to large crime-plagued cities. These cities are policed by “Judges” who act as judge, jury and executioner and Judge Dredd is the best and baddest of the bunch in Mega-City One.

You are not the law. You are SO not the law.

The first attempt to bring the character to the big screen was the 1995 film Judge Dredd with Sylvester Stallone in the title role. The film was a mediocre action flick with awful comedy (thank you Rob Schneider) and strayed from the dark tone of the comics. And worst of all Stallone spent most of the movie sans helmet; in the comic stories the character wears it 99 per cent of the time and the rest of the time his face is obscured.

I see some people over there who need to be judged.

Then in 2012 we had Dredd directed by Pete Travis with Urban in the role and it was awesome. Urban captured the gritty, stoic character perfectly and (bonus) keeps his helmet on at all times. We also had great performances from Olivia Thirlby as his psychic partner and Game of Thrones Lena Headey as brutal drug lord Ma-Ma. The flick was an action masterpiece that sadly few people went to see and hopes for a sequel were dim. But now with Urban’s announcement we can look forward to more from the dread Judge Dredd.

So have you seen Dredd? Are you excited about a sequel? Feel free to comment below.
