Woke up this morning to learn that, after teasing us for an entire season like the fisherman with the dollar in that State Farm commercial, we are finally going to see Superman on the Supergirl TV series.
Now mind you we have seen him from afar, as a kid, in silhouette and read his texts. We’ve even seen a close up of his super boots! Good times. It was like Wilson from Home Improvement but with more cape.
Executive producer Andrew Kreisberg, speaking on behalf of fellow producers Greg Berlanti and Ali Adler, said “Greg, Ali and I are beyond thrilled to welcome Clark Kent and his slightly-more-famous alter ego to the world of Supergirl. Superman will be appearing in the first two episodes of the new season and we cannot wait to see who next dons the red cape!”
This news comes after less than stellar viewership the show was moved from CBS to the CW where it will join DC shows like The Flash, Arrow and Legends of Tomorrow. What’s interesting is that DC, unlike Marvel, has kept their TV and movie universes separate – so that’s a no on Henry Cavill – and has blocked the TV shows from using certain characters. The removal of the Suicide Squad and Amanda Waller from Arrow is a prime example.
So to have Superman, one of their biggest movie properties, appearing on Supergirl is a major policy shift. I presume the Supergirl producers previously kept Supes in the shadows as not to overshadow Supergirl and he will likely only appear now and again. I look forward to seeing who will be cast.
So who do you think should be cast as Superman? Should Smallville’s Tom Welling don the blue and red tights? Feel free to comment below.
