X-Men: Apocalypse Review (Spoiler Free)

Greeting folkses. Your mango overlord Julien had the pleasure of watching the latest X-Men film last night.

Now I was pumped from the trailers. We have Apocalypse as big bad and you don’t much bigger bad than the quasi-immortal god complex first mutant. And the action and effects in the trailers looked pretty thrilling.

Hold on guys

Now I have heard reviews on both ends of the spectrum – it’s bad or it’s the best X-Men movie ever. So which is it? I know, the suspense is killing you. Patience Clarice.

Without giving anything away I would say Apocalypse (the movie) is closer to the top than the bottom. It does several things very well. There are scenes and effects in this movie blew my ever loving mind. And my ever loving mind is not blown easily. Remember that Quicksilver scene from Days of Future Past (DOFP)? You didn’t think they could top it did you? They did. Ermagerhd they did.

I thought Oscar Isaac brought the necessary gravitas to Apocalypse, Michael Fassbender had a better story arc than in DOFP and I enjoyed Jennifer Lawrence more, though her character is way off comic book.

My biggest praise is that it really felt like a team movie rather than a Wolverine and the X-Men movie. It may not have balanced its cast as well as Captain America: Civil War (see my review here) but characters do get a chance to shine.

The movie had the potential to be better than X2 and First Class, the two best in the franchise IMHO, but some underdeveloped characters, unclear motivations and a disappointing fight scene dropped it down for me to number three. Still the movie is fantastic, a lot of fun and great for any X-fan.

So what did you think of the movie? Feel free to comment below.
